Inspiring Beginnings

HOW SACRED CANOPY EVENTS DANCE WAS BORN

My name is Mary Sidi Kubai, and I am a proud single mother.I am a born-again Christian. Born and raised in Kenya as one of 11 siblings, I come from a family deeply rooted in the history of our nation. My father, a politician, political activist, and leader among Kenya’s freedom fighters, played a significant role in our country's journey to independence in 1963.

Inspired by my father, who recognized and nurtured my talents, I pursued a career in music, art, and dance. He often told me that my gifts in these areas would take me far, and I embraced his advice wholeheartedly. After graduating from high school in 1994, I embarked on my professional journey as a dancer.

My career began at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi, where I joined the SAFARI CATS DANCE GROUP. After a few months of rigorous training, I was selected to perform with the group in Seoul and Pusan, South Korea. Over the following years, I travelled and performed in Dubai, India, Thailand, Hong Kong, and Bahrain, gaining invaluable experience and exposure.

I spent five years at the Safari Park Hotel, where I honed my skills in contemporary ballet, modern dance, and choreography. This expertise led me to Mombasa, where I became a dance teacher at the Florida Hotel from 1997 to 2000. In 2000, my passion for helping others guided me to transition into a children’s dance ministry, focusing on marginalized and impoverished children.

Since then, I have been dedicated to training young dancers in Mombasa, Nairobi, and Kitengela, where I currently reside. Many of my students have gone on to become dance teachers, choreographers, and performing artists themselves. My life’s work has been devoted to teaching vulnerable children, some as young as three, and I take immense pride in watching them grow and thrive through the opportunities and skills they gain.

I am now expanding my program to include Event planning and Design, incorporating performing arts, cooking, decorating, customer service, and strategic planning. I believe this initiative will empower my graduates to start their own businesses, breaking free from the cycle of poverty and hopelessness.

God bless.

Teach Skills

What services to the individuals/community SCED provide?

Teaching dance, performing arts, and choreography to youth in community Mentoring the children to become dance teachers, performing artists and choreographers. Educating the illiterate children, youth and the elderly in our community. Feeding and clothing programs for the poor and vulnerable children, youth and the elderly in our community.

How is SCED work/service charitable?

Working with ‘at risk’ children whose families are in extreme poverty. Teaching skills which they can use as performance, therapy or potential income. Our mentoring program gives them a safe place to develop in skills and emotions. Our literacy programs for the young and old provides them with a survival tool.

Many young girls are being forced to early marriages and go through Female Genital mutilation (FGM)…in the Maasai land where the church has branches, we provide a charity rescue center for these poor vulnerable girls. Our program teaches these girls dance, team building, Home Economics, personal hygiene and event planning and decorations as charitable work. This will boost their life style and well-being

Here are two parts to Mary’s activity through Sacred Canopy Events Dance : 1) Feeding and caring for the Maasai girls and 2) Running an EVENT BUSINESS which both brings you income for living and also teaches girls how to plan and run events that generates an income.
